Hard Times Getting Better – West San Carlos Street

After the fire, little remained of the Club’s furnishings; most of what was left was soiled. It was fortunate that one of the members, Harvie W., was an insurance agent and had convinced the members of the need for protection against this sad event. Another member, Bill B., ran an accounting and tax service out of his garage and had the Club assets on IBM punch cards. 1139 Minnesota Avenue

The members took over in July 1957. In 1959, the Minnesota Street property was purchased by Kenneth Stringfellow and B. Floyd Farr, non-alcoholics, the Club rent going in July from $135 to $150 per month until September of 1961 when it was raised to $160 per month.  The rent was consistently at least a month late, going to about two months late after the $160 rate. 1122 Fair Avenue Club

In 1962, the membership decided to purchase their own clubhouse, locating the Fair Avenue  facility through a real estate listing. The property was originally built as the McKinley School in 1911 as part of the Franklin School District,  established in 1886. The school was built to serve the children of local fruit growers, as well as the few farmers in the area. In the 1920's, it was on one of the routes used by the Garden City Wheelmen as a bicycle racing course from Story Road to McLaughlin, down Fair Avenue to Lucretia ending on Keyes Road. At the time…
